Will restore Naini lake to its former glory at any cost: Uttarakhand Govt

The government of Uttarakhand is determined to not let famous Naini lake to dry up and would take stringent action for its protection. While addressing a meeting of officials and environmentalists at Uttarakhand Academy of Administration at Nainital, chief secretary of Uttarakhand Utpal Kumar Singh said that government is leaving no stones unturned to bring the dried up Naini lake to its former glory. He also added that encroachments from the Sukhatal area will also be removed so that rain water in easily channel into the lake.

In the meeting, chief secretary of Uttarakhand Utpal Kumar Singh took following actions:

  • Directed Chief Engineer Irrigation, D K Pachauri to take action against houses which are putting rain water into sewage lines.
  • No construction activities should be allowed in the catchment area as well as green belt around the lake.
  • Extensive afforestation drive in the green belt around the lake will be undertaken by forest department.
  • Directed DM Dipendra Kumar Chaudhari to review and assessment of the lake conservation works undertaken by the irrigation department on a regular basis.

Noted environmentalist Ajay Rawat suggested that clogged drains should be cleared so that water could accumulate at Sukhatal which would ultimately seep into the Naini lake. He also added that cement concrete roads around lake should be banned so that water is allowed to percolate from the surface.
