Widening the Haridwar-Highway becomes major topic for Uttarakhand Elections

From the past six years, the work related to widening the Haridwar-Roorkee highway is pending. While the work related to broadening the highway from Haridwar to Dehradun is being done at a slow pace. To make things worse, the load of vehicles plus the regular jams have worsened the situation and this matter has become a hot topic of discussion for the upcoming elections.

Each year, many devotees throng Haridwar to become a part of the sacred bathing festivals held here. During Char Dham Yatra and Kavad Mela, the vehicles cause a lot of chaos on the roads and highways due to which the locals, as well as the tourists, have to suffer. To give a little relief to the devotees, six years back the work for constructing the Muzzafarnagar to Haridwar highway into four-lane was started. For about 80 km distance the budget was outlay to Rs. 754 crores. While the 39 km road laid from Haridwar to Dehradun was to be transformed into a four-lane, at an estimated cost of Rs 478 crores. But hindrances like the lack of funds, weak planning, delay in land acquisition, shifting the electricity polls and issues related to encroachment has made the work slow.

Currently, the work for building the four-lane highway is in progress. However, according to the proposed target, the work should have been completed by March 2013. Since the work associated with the four-lane highway project is lagging behind now the cost of the project has increased several times.
