Uttarakhand youngster wins gold in Asian Junior Badminton Championship

Uttarakhand’s Lakshya Sen made history when he clinched gold medal in the Asian Junior Badminton Championship 2018 held in Jakarta. The 16-year old badminton player defeated the top seeded World No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand 21-19 and 21-19 in straight sets in the finals. With this remarkable feat, Lakshya Sen became the first male Indian player in 53 years to win the prestigious Asian Junior Badminton Championship.

Born in Almora district to a family of badminton aficionados, Lakshya Sen’s road to victory was not easy. Sen freely admitted to having felt the pressure of not only being the only Indian player in the finals of a tournament dominated by the Chinese but also being just the sixth seed in the event, facing the world’s top junior and the odds-on favorite to win the title He faced Ikhshan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay of Indonesia in the semi-final. While keeping an edge on opponents dash, Lakshya placed an aggressive game and eventually won 21-7, 21-14 and entered into the final facing the World No.1.

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat congratulated Lakshya Sen on winning the 2018 Asian Junior Championship and said Lakshya has not only illuminated Uttarakhand but also the name of India in the world of sports.
