Uttarakhand seeks help from France for ski resorts, ropeways and winter tourism

In order to attract foreign as well domestic tourists towards Uttarakhand,  the tourism department is exploring various ways to improve the tourism infrastructure in the state. Taking cues from the winter tourism that is popular in the French Alps, a team of senior government officials visited Chamonix in France to study and understand the development of mountain based adventure tourism. Chamonix is a popular skiing destination in France and is home to the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world.

The delegation to France comprised of Satpal Maharaj, Minister of Tourism and R Meenakshi Sundaram, Secretary, Uttarakhand Tourism which met officials from France to discuss the feasibility of introduce skiing, ropeway and funicular facilities in Uttarakhand. Productive discussions were conducted with Cluster Mountain Group, which is essentially a sustainable mountain tourism development think tank under French tourism department.

The Cluster Mountain Group expressed its willingness in undertaking the project in the state and help turn Auli, Bedini Bugyal, Dayara Bugyal and Betulidhar into world class ski resorts. Apart from that, the delegation also visited the Doppelmayr factory, which is the world’s leading cable car manufacturers based in Wolfurt, Austria.
