After 16 years, Uttarakhand govt finally gets 37 irrigation canals from UP

Uttar Pradesh government under the aegis of CM Yogi Adiytanath has handed over 37 disputed irrigation canals to Uttarakhand government without any delay. When Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in 2000, the little did anyone thought the issue of asset division among various departments of the two states such as irrigation, transportation and industrial development would linger on for 16 years. Such has been the politics between the two neighboring states for over a decade. However, 2017 is turning out to a year of hope for Uttarakhand govt. With BJP government at helm in both Uttarakhand and UP, it seems the disputes are slowly being put to rest between the two states.

“On the behalf of Uttarakhand public, I express gratitude towards Yogi Adityanath’s decision for handing over the irrigation canals to Uttarakhand. We sincerely hope Uttar Pradesh government will continue to distribute the other assets between the two states in good faith and with good co-ordination .”

– Trivendra Singh Rawat, Chief Minister, Uttarakhand

Other Uttarakhand assets currently under UP government

While it looks the 37 irrigation canal dispute has been settled once and for all,  Uttarakhand is hoping other important assets and liabilities dispute are settled as well. At present, there are more than 10 departments of Uttarakhand govt in which dispute over division of assets and liabilities has not reached to any positive conclusion.
