UPCL to provide electricity to 97,000 unlit homes in Kumaon region

In a survey conducted by Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), it has been found out that close to 97,000 homes in four districts in Kumaon division were yet to get electricity connections. Following this, the department approached Centre and Rs. 5 crore has been released under Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana. Under this scheme, the homes of below poverty line (BPL) families will be electrified free of cost while a nominal charge of Rs. 500 will be charged from above poverty lines families.

Centre has released Rs. 5 crore and work will be started in four districts within 2-3 weeks. We have started the tendering process and bids have been invited. Our aim is to provide hassle free power supply to more than 8.5 lakh consumers. I will be personally looking into the matters related to power outage, overloading, power theft etc and resolve them at earliest.

– Prakash Chandra Pande, Chief Engineer, UPCL
