UDAN Scheme: Govt. to start cheaper helicopter services to start in Uttarakhand

In order to provide benefits of the UDAN scheme to the hill states where there aren’t adequate flights and airports, the government has decided to include helicopter services. As a result, the air connectivity will increase in the hill states such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, north-eastern as well as Andaman and Nicobar islands. In  airstrips with little or no helicopter services in Uttarakhand such as in Pithoragrah, Chinyalisaur and Gauchar as well as Haridwar and Pantnagar airstrips will be part of this scheme.

States such as Uttarakhand, Himachal and all north eastern states are included as priorities under this scheme. As there are many advance landing grounds in Himachal and Uttarakhand, the aviation companies can submit tenders for operation in these regions. However, regarding the security, no relaxation will be provided.

– Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation

The government has asked helicopter companies to submit tenders regarding the services. Smaller aircraft are also permitted to lend their services in the designated regions. For making this scheme practical for heli operators, the government has also decided to increase the gap funding. This means, the helicopter companies will be able to provide services at nominal rates with government reimbursing the price difference. The cost of 1-hour helicopter flight will be round Rs. 2500/-.
