The Old Tehri town was slowly submerged in the 1990s when the green light to construct Tehri Dam was signaled by the then government. While the dwellers were shifted to New Tehri as a result, the buildings in old Tehri town are still intact underwater.  Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj believes underwater ride will offer a unique thrilling experience and will increase the influx of tourists, especially foreigners.

Up until now, popularity of underwater tourism in India has been limited to coastal states and islands. However, with the introduction of water sports at Tehri Lake in previous years, submarine ride could become a reality. According to the tourism minster, small submarines will be deployed for underwater tourism at Tehri lake.

“Buildings and structures like Clock Tower, Purana Darbar, Naya Darbar, Swami Ram Teerath Ashram, Main market area, Pakoriwali Gali of the submerged town could become major tourist attractions. It will be, in a way, a ride back in time to experience the struggle and sacrifice this town made. Submarines rides are already popular all around the world, especially in Australia.

– Satpal Maharaj, Tourism Minister, Uttarakhand

Turning Old Tehri town into a tourist hotspot is one the priorities of the Uttarakhand tourism department. Apart from that, the department will also focus on increasing the popularity of  Ayurveda Tourism, Eco tourism and Yoga Tourism.
