Tourism in Uttarakhand gets industry status, cabinet meets over Tehri lake

In a cabinet meeting that took place in floating marina over Tehri lake, the Uttarakhand government have decided to give tourism an industry status. With this, all tourism related activities in the state will be eligible for all the facilities and subsidies other industries get. This decision will help encourage the tourism in the state and provide employment opportunities as well as attract more investors towards the tourism sector.

In lieu of this decision, all the activities related to Ayurveda, Yoga, Panchkarma, Greek medicine, Homeopathy, Spa, Power boat, Skiing games, water skiing, rafting, bungee jumping, trekking will be categorized under Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME).

The cabinet also decided to include Ayush and Wellness Centers in the Mega Industry Investment policy which will allow 22 activities including hotels, resorts, sea plane, ropeways, Ayurveda, yoga to be eligible for privileges under that policy.

In order to attract youth towards entrepreneurship, the government also increased the reach of Veer Chandra Garhwali Paryatan Swarozgar Yojana which was introduced in 2002. It was the first self-employment scheme to make tourism a major source of employment and revenue generation. Now, there will be additional 11 activities that will fall under this scheme which include trekking equipments, kayaking, caravan, angling, stargazing, laundry, bakery, museum etc.

Advantage of Industry (MSME) status to Tourism sector

1. Free electricity upto 100kWA for five years.

2. 50% reimbursement on internet expense.

3. 100% discount on Mandi fee

3. 40% fixed capital investment by the government to set up plants, machinery and basic facilities
