Swacch Bharat: Gangotri, Yamunotri included in Swacch Iconic Place list

Gangotri – the abode of Goddess Ganga and one of the revered pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand –  has been included in Swachh Iconic Places (SIP) list by the central government. The SIP is an initiative under Swacch Bharat Mission in which top 100 most iconic places in India of culturally, historically, or aesthetically importance, are selected where exclusive cleanliness and sanitation programmes will be carried out.

While the list of tourist destinations selected for SIP initiative (Phase 1) didn’t include any places from Uttarakhand, Gangotri and Yamunotri were among the 10 destinations chosen for phase 2 of the SIP initiative. The main objectives of the project is to improve basic infrastructure such as sanitation, waste collection, solar lamps, providing potable water as well as beautifying the place.

Under the Swacch Iconic Place initiative, these sites will be jointly developed by Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in collaboration with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, tourism, culture, state governments as well private and public companies under their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

ONGC has been selected as the CSR partner for sanitation development related projects at Gangotri Dham with district administration preparing the DPR report for proper execution of projects. An amount of Rs. 4-5 crore will be spend yearly for maintenance of the pilgrimage site. However, no new construction will take place as Gangotri falls in the eco sensitive zone.
