Students in Govt schools to chant prayer in Sanskrit before mid-day meal

As a part of their mid-day meal ritual, around 12 lakh students in 18,000 government schools in Uttarakhand will chant a prayer in Sanskrit before consuming their mid-day meal. Uttarakhand education minister Arvind Pandey has suggested in a recently held review meeting that a daily chanting of prayer be incorporated in daily curriculum. However, chanting the mantra or painting it on the kitchen walls won’t be compulsory. It will be left to the discretion of the school authorities and the students.

The state government is also planning to introduce prayers in Kumaoni and Garhwali languages in respective regions as well as introducing Gayatri Mantra and Saraswati Vandana to the students as morning morning prayers. The schools will also be asked to include yoga, lectures on great Indian leaders as part of the curriculum.
