Special tourist buses in Uttarakhand to promote Pahadi cultural tourism

Uttarakhand government is mulling over the idea of introducing special bus services for tourists to enjoy and appreciate the Pahadi culture imbibed in various folk arts and traditions. While Uttarakhand is fondly known for hill stations, adventure tourism and Char Dham Yatra, there is also an untapped cultural tourism potential with attractions such as forts, temples and heritage sites. The tourists will also be introduced to Kumaoni and Garhwali cuisine during their bus journey in the hills of Uttarakhand.

According to tourism minister Satpal Maharaj, a bus service will be introduced to each 13 districts of the state and tourists will be able to visit famous temples, heritage sites as well as enjoy traditional folk music and dance. Colloquially known as ‘Land of the Gods’, Uttarakhand is dotted with revered temples and shrines that have mythological connotations to Mahabharata. It is believed Pandavas visited Himalayas and ascended to heaven after the Kurushetra War. One can also visit the Lakhudiayar near Almora which is the site of ancient cave paintings which are believed to be 5,000 year old.

The scheme also hold potential contribute to the local economy as the youth will be trained to be local guides with information about a particular heritage site or temple. It will also help bring sumptuous Uttarakhand cuisine in the limelight.
