Services of 5,500 Uttarakhand Guest Teachers to end on March 31, 2017

The services of about 5,500 guest teachers posted in the far-flung areas of Uttarakhand will end after a week. The department had an agreement with the guest teachers for an academic session which will conclude on March 31, 2017. These guest teachers were deployed in the distant and remote areas of Uttarakhand. According to the procedure, these guest teachers were deployed for a period of 89 days and after completing their term of service or till the steady appointment of the new teachers whichever will be initiated first, their services will be continued. Later in 2016, stipulated salary was fixed at Rs 15,000 and their academic session was increased from 89 days to one year.

Soon after the decree regarding the guest teachers were altered and a new rulebook was issued for the temporary guest teacher service. According to the new rulebook, after 3 years of temporary service the guest teachers will become permanent, for which no applications were accepted and no new announcements were made. While the term of service of these teachers will end on March 31 this year due to which all the guest teachers of the state are in disparity. Looking into this matter, the Governor has assured relief to the guest teachers and quoted that the temporary nature of the jobs offered to the guest teachers and contract teachers will be resolved soon.

When ex-Uttarakhand CM sat in a strike to support the Guest Teachers

During Congress Government in Uttarakhand, ex-Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat’s gave his full support to the guest teachers and also held a strike for them. During President’s Rule in the state, then Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat and Education Minister Mantri Prasad Naithani came in the support of the teachers at Kanak Chowk in Dehradun, where they sat in a protest. This shook the governing bodies to take instant action regarding alteration of the rules and regulations for the guest teachers.

RK Kunwar, Director of Education Secondary Education said, “The matter regarding the guest teachers will be taken to the HC and the hearing will be done on April 10, 2017. The rules and regulations made by the former government for the guest teachers will also be challenged in the court. The verdict given by the court will be final and everybody will abide by it”.
