NCERT textbooks to be Uttarakhand-oriented from 2018-19 academic session

From the 2018-19 academic session, the students in Uttarakhand schools will be able to learn more about the state as the NCERT textbooks will become more Uttarakhand-oriented than they are now. The textbooks will include chapters focusing exclusively on Uttarakhand’s history, art and culture, fairs and festivals etc. The students will also be able to learn about state symbols as well as revered pilgrimage sites such as Kedarnath, Badrinath, Dronagiri, Patal Bhuvaneshwar etc.

To achieve this, State Council of Education, Research and Training (SCERT) has set up a 16-member Syllabus Committee which will seek copyright permission from NCERT in this regard. Additionally, a list of chapters to be included in the syllabus is also being prepared by the committee. The syllabus committee will seek NCERT’s permission for the editing chapters in the textbooks as well as printing of the same. Currently, there are many chapters in various standards that are not at all crucial from Uttarakhand’s perspective.

Earlier, government of Maharashtra followed a similar approach when the education department omitted several non-relatable chapters from class VIII history textbooks and instead focused on Chhatrapati Shivaji’s reign and conquests during 17th century AD.
