Allocate land for Sewage Treatment Plant in 24 hours: HC to Forest Dept

Uttarakhand High Court on Tuesday directed forest department to allocate suitable land within 24 hours for setting up sewage treatment plant in Haldwani where solid waste could be treated with scientific method. The court also directed to provide forest clearance at earliest. The court also added that after allocating the lad, sewage treatment plant would be constructed within six months as directed in earlier court order.

The directions were given by the justice bench of justices Rajiv Sharma and Sharad Kumar Sharma while hearing an public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Haldwani-based Jan Vikas Samiti of Indira Nagar in 2017. The PIL highlighted the illegal dumping of biological waste around the banks of Gola river in the name of trenching ground. These illegal activities are causing environmental pollution and is proving to be detrimental to the local people and ecology.

Even the trenching ground which holds hundred of tonnes of solid waste has been operating on the forest and without permission. Hundreds of tonnes of waste materials are being dumped into the trenching ground at the Gola Bypass in Haldwani area on daily basis, causing problems for the residents who live nearby.
