Warden of the North: Prominent historian Dr. Sher Singh Pangtey pass away

Noted for his contribution towards researching and preserving the Bhotia culture of Johar valley in Uttarakhand Himalayas,  famous historian and author Dr. Sher Singh Pangtey passed away Tuesday morning in Dehradun. Born and brought up in the cradle of Johar valley in Bhainskhal village in Munsiyari tehsil in 1937, Dr. Pangtey completed is M.A. (History) and later, his Ph.D in Johar valley and its indigenous Bhotia tribes.

Apart form authoring various books, plays and travelogues, he’s perhaps the most notable contribution is the Tribal Heritage Museum – a private museum showcasing Bhotia culture and traditions which he founded in 2000. Located in Munsiyari town in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, the museum is collection of handicrafts, attire, utensils, music instruments and handlooms showcasing the vibrant customs and tradition of Bhotia culture. The museum will remain closed for three days as the whole Johar valley mourns his demise.
