Uttarakhand government prohibits sale of tobacco products near 3 major Sikh pilgrimages

Keeping in mind the religious sanctity, Uttarakhand government have prohibited the sale of tobacco products within the 5-km radius of 3 revered Sikh pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. In accordance with The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COPTA),  the government has banned the sale, distribution and tobacco within 5 km radius of Hemkund Sahib, Nanakmatta and Reetha Sahib Gurudwara. The law will be in force from today itself.

Additional Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand Omprakash gave the final orders to implement the law. With his law, the revered pilgrimage of Hemkund Sahib may not be affected that much due to its remote location. However, the market places at Reetha Sahib and Nanakmatta will be adversely affected. There are around 50 shops near Reetha Sahib.
