NGT orders Stay on Char Dham All Weather Road project

National Green Tribunal (NGT) have issued a stay order on the various construction work that is taking place in Uttarakhand under the Char Dham All Weather project. The green court have ordered Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to submit their reply at next hearing. The 4-judge bench helmed by Justice Javaad Rahim gave the order in response to the petition filed by Citizen for Green Doon, an NGO based in Dehradun. The next hearing on the case would take place on March 20, 2018.

Last year, PM Modi inaugurated the ambitious Char Dham highway project worth 12,000 crore which would cover 889 kilometers. At present, widening of 356 kilometers have been completed which resulted in the loss of 25,000 trees have been axed. The remaining 544 kilometers will result in more trees being chopped down. Petitioners argue that for a project of this magnitude, just forest department’s permission is not enough. They also argued that the widening of roads are being done in small projects (less than 100 km) in order to steer clear of any environmental clearance.
