In an initiative to protect the endangered Mahaseer species in Kosi and Ramganga river , the forest department is planning to rope in local fishermen to ensure safety of the species. The project – titled Mahaseer Watch – aims at hiring locals for the conservation of the fish species. According to the reports, the major threats faced by the species is the blatant use of dynamites, poison and electricity for catching the fish which adversely affects the marine ecosystem.

The sharp decrease in the fish population is a grave concern for the forest department. According to the former member of State Wildlife Board, Anup Sah said that over 100 rivers and tributaries are facing the threat. Angling once used to be an integral pastime inside Corbett National Park. However, due to irregularities, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) stopped the services in 2013.
