U’khand aims at becoming Alcohol free State: Liquor banned in 3 districts

A feat for the women of Uttarakhand who had been constantly raising their voice against liquor consumption in the state as HC bans liquor in the 3 districts of Uttarakhand. After the verdict given by the Nainital High Court alcohol will be completely banned in the three districts of Uttarakhand from April 1. HC has also ordered that no license will be given to the liquor shops that are situated within 1 km distance from the educational institutions, holy places and hospitals. However, the approval of Supreme Court is still pending on this decision, until then the order of the High Court will comply.

On December 8, 2016, the High Court gave orders in the favour of Char Dham Yatris that the selling of liquor in the three districts of Uttarakhand namely Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli will be banned from the next financial year. Responding to which, the Excise Department filed an SLP in the Supreme Court, the hearing for which will be conducted on Friday. In addition to this, the decision whether the liquor shops thriving within 500 metres from the state highways and national highways will be banned or not will also be given on Friday.
