Rejoice! Uttarakhand to host international skiing tournament at Auli in January 2018

In order to promote winter sports in Uttarakhand which will subsequently improve the tourism in the state, the Uttarakhand government have found some success, it seems. The International Ski Federation (FIS) have accepted their proposal to organize an international-level skiing tournament. The ski tournament will be held at Auli from 15-21 January, 2018. This will be major step in tourism department’s attempt to turn Auli into a world class ski resort. In 2011, South Asian Winter Games were also held at Dehradun and Auli to encourage winter sports in Uttarakhand.

R. Meenakshi Sundaram (Secretary, Tourism & CEO, UTDB) wrote a letter to International Ski Federation seeking approval to host skiing tournament with assurance that Uttarakhand is ready to host world-level tournaments and events. The ski federation replied positively to the request and have updated the event schedule on their official website. Professional skiers from all around the world are expected to be part of this tournament.

The upcoming skiing tournament will have a total of 14 events with 6 Slalom and 8 Giant Slalom events. Slalom is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. The skier must pass between the two poles forming the gate. Giant Slalom is a similar discipline albeit involves skiing between sets of poles (gates) spaced at a greater distance to each other than in slalom.
