Howzat! Uttarakhand to finally make Ranji Trophy debut after 18-year-long wait

Since the formation of state of Uttarakhand in 2000, the 18-year-long wait for the hill state to make Ranji Trophy debut has finally come to an end. In a BCCI meeting chaired by CoA chairman Vinod Rai, it was decided that Uttarakhand will make its Ranji Trophy debut in upcoming season. A nine-member consensus committee will be formed which will oversee the state’s domestic debut in upcoming season.

They (all rival associations in Uttarakhand) have swept aside their differences to ensure that a team from Uttarakhand plays Ranji Trophy and other BCCI tournaments from the upcoming season. So, by consensus, a committee has been formed with BCCI nominees in it. It will start working from next week onwards,”

–  Vinod Rai, chairman (CoA)

The ‘consensus committee’ is expected to function around for one year before a BCCI-recognized body is formed in Uttarakhand. The lack of an BCCI affiliated association has hurt the cricketer in the state badly as many were forced to play for other states.  The competition currently consists of 30 teams, with 23 of the 29 states in India and Delhi having at least one representation.
