After the 1962 Indo-Sino war, Government of India restricted the entry of tourists in the inner line region of Uttarkashi which included Nelang valley and vast portion of Harsil valley. However, locals with Hotel Association and trekking operators protested against the decision. In 2014, the Gangotri National Park administration and with local support sent a proposal to Government of India after which Home Ministry gave permission to Indian tourists to visit the Nelang valley. In April this year, district administration made a report regarding inner line region and urged the Centre to omit Harsil from the restricted area, which was accepted.
