Explain why traffic management not be outsourced, asks Uttarakhand High court

Uttarakhand High court asked the state government, central government and NHAI to give reasons why traffic management in Uttarakhand should not be outsourced to an expert agency. The court asked the respondents to explain in three week’s time why they were unable to manage traffic issues across the state, especially in major tourist cities such as Dehradun, Mussoorie, Haridwar, Nainital etc.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a Roorkee resident, a division bench of justices issued noticesĀ  respective agencies and also asked NHAI to explain the delay in widening of the NH 58 between Roorkee and Haridwar which causes long traffic jams and accidents. The petition also raised the issue of traffic congestion due to delay in construction of the national highway as well as movement of illegal tractor-trolleys on NH-58.

In the PIL, it is also mentioned that that although NH 58 is under construction for several years, no construction activities can be seen on the road between Roorkee and Haridwar where the roads are in pathetic condition, especially the first 7-km stretch of NH 58.
