Chardham project: NGT sends notice to Centre, Uttarakhand over muck disposal plan

National Green Tribunal (NGT) sought replies from Centre and Uttarakhand government while hearing an NGO plea for a time-bound muck disposal plan for the Char Dham Highway Project. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel issued notices to the Environment Ministry, Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways and Uttarakhand government seeking reply related to the muck disposal. The hearing on this matter will take place on August 26.

The green court was hearing a plea filed by NGO Common Cause seeking directions to submit a time-bound muck disposal plan at the earliest and bar the project proponent from constructing a road until proper disposal of muck already generated was undertaken. The plea submitted by NGO alleged that the respondents in Char Dham Project, which includes road widening and construction of approximately 900 kms of national highways, have bypassed the legal requirement of conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
