Char Dham Yatra begins in Uttarakhand, Gangotri-Yamunotri shrines open

On the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya, the revered Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage began as the shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri were thrown open to the devotees and pilgrims amidst the elaborate rituals and chanting of Vedic hymns. The gates of the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines were opened on Wednesday at 1:15 PM and 12:15 PM respectively, as per the temple committee officials. The portals for other two revered shrines in the Char Dham circuit – Kedarnath and Badrinath – are scheduled to reopen on April 29 and April 30 respectively.

The palanquin carrying the idol of goddess Ganga reached the Gangotri shrine in the morning at around 10 AM from Bhairav Ghati where the deity is worshiped during the winter. A special prayer ceremony was conducted by the head priest for over three hours before formally opening the gates of the Gangotri shrine. A similar ceremony was also conducted at Yamunotri shrine. Every year, Char Dham Yatra witnesses millions of pilgrims from all aorund teh country and abroad.
