Char Dham Project: Rs. 1384 crore tunnel from Dharasu to Yamunotri approved

The Government of India today approved a tunnel that is a part of the ongoing Char Dham road project in Uttarakhand which aims to connect Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.  The proposal to construct a Rs. 1384 crore tunnel from Dharasu to Yamunotri was approved in a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) meeting chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi.

The CCEA gave its nod to build a 4.5 km long 2-lane bi-directional Silkyara Bend – Barkot Tunnel with escape passage including approaches on Dharasu -Yamunotri section between Chainage 25.4 km and Chainage 51 km in Uttarakhand. The tunnel is expected to be completed in 4 years and will provide all weather connectivity to Yamunotri.

The construction of tunnel will save a large number of tress that would have been chopped down had the original alignment of construction of road was followed instead. The project will be implemented by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) through NHIDCL.
