4 Uttarakhand districts to introduce regional language in school curriculum

The government schools in four districts of Uttarakhand will include regional languages in the school curriculum for the ongoing academic session. Garhwali will be taught in the Pauri district while Jaunsari will be taught in Dehradun district. Schools in Almora and Pithoragarh will teach Kumaoni and Rung dialects in their schools respectively. In the first phase of the pilot project, 5-5 schools have been selected from the four districts on a trail basis. Once the project shows positive results, the regional dialects will be introduced to the rest of the schools.

The demand for inclusion of regional languages (dialects) as a subject in the government school curriculum has been raised for quite a long time. In most of the states in India, regional languages is already a compulsory subject in school curriculum. Earlier, the education department would procrastinate the matter stating the different dialects in different region as the reason. However, in the past 3-4 years, the department has prepared the syllabus for the regional dialects. Books up to class 10 have been prepared by the state education department (SCERT).

The selected schools where these regional language will be taught, feedback will be taken from the teachers, students and parents after which necessary changes will be made before introducing the regional dialect as a school subject statewide.
