1150 hectares of forest vegetation engulfed in fire in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand forests are burning for the past six days with more than 1150 hectare of forest land already lost in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal division. The forest fire is continuously raging in Pauri Garhwal, Badrinath, Alaknanda and Rudraprayag forest divisions, which has amounted to a total loss of Rs. 24 lakh. The forests started catching fire after the temperature rose quickly in the past week. The forest department received around 600 fire alerts from its satellite on Tuesday.

The raging fire was also reported to reach close to several villages in the Pauri forest division which forced villagers to keep vigil over advancing fire all night. However, forest department blames villagers for intentionally set on fire the dry grass and pine needles in order to reclaim fresh fodder for their domestic animals which sometimes, gets out of control. The devastation caused by forest fires is not a new issue in Uttarakhand. In 2016, the forest fires got so out of hand that helicopters were called to douse the wildfire.
